Post menopausal status

Options

How is post menopausal status confirmed? I am 15 months since my last period, but doctor wants to administer Lupron for 2-3 years to assure I am post-menopausal to prescribe AIs. She says blood tests are unreliable. Pretty unhappy with using Lupron if it isn't necessary. Anyone with a similar experience to share?

    Hi FindingOptimism-

Welcome to BCO! We're so glad you've joined us here, and hope you find this to be a supportive place. Menopause is diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a period. At 15 months since menstruation, it would seem as though you're postmenopausal. Has your doctor mentioned what she considers postmenopausal? We can certainly understand not wanting to take Lupron unnecessarily, can you ask her for clarification of what she would feel makes you "officially" postmenopausal?

We're sure other members will chime in with their guidance and advice. but we hope you're able to get some clearer answers from your doctor!

    Hi FindingOptimism,

I would seek a second opinion about being given those shots. It's been a long time but I had several blood tests (can't remember exactly which ones) to test for menopause. I was told on three different occasions after the blood tests results came back that I was menopausal; the first two times my periods started up again. The third time I really was. Let us know what you find out.

I've had blood tests for Estradiol, FSH, and LH. My MO is mostly interested in the Estradiol - I think it had to be less than 40. My GYN mostly cares about the FSH (high).

I had no period for 18 months after chemo stopped them and then - surprise! But only that once and none since, now almost five months later.

Could you take Tamoxifen instead? The AI advantage is pretty small if I recall correctly.
