Period after 11.5 years?

Options

The last period I had was in 2007 at age 39 and I am now 51. Chemo, radiation, tamox and Femara. I stopped Femara about 9 months ago. Today I was having a ton of cramping and thought it might be constipation. But tonight I started bleeding! Obviously I will call the Dr tomorrow but just wondering if I should be worried. Anyone else have this happen? Thanks

Hi Conniehar, so sorry you have this worry. Def seek the doctor's advice and they'll probably send you for scans just to be safe. Could be a period - your body waking back up after all this time! hopefully that's what it is. Good luck

Thanks for worrying about me! Multiple issues - They found an infection but don’t think that was the cause - currently on antibiotics. Had the ultrasound and found a small cyst on an ovary - also don’t think that’s the problem. They also found a thickened lining in my uterus and it seems that think that is the issue so I am going to a specialist on Dec 3rd for a possible biopsy. The bleeding stopped after 5 days - no idea if that means anything. I will update this thread when I know more. Trying to stay positive

I don't have your same history of no period for that long, but ... I did stop having periods during chemo. I was 50 at the time and had been very regular up until then.

Fast forward through chemo, surgery, and a short stint with Tamoxifen, and finishing Herceptin - and I had some pain and was sent for a sono. I had a thickened uterine lining and an ovarian cyst. They opted to wait with recheck in three months. Result - worsening lining and septated cyst!

The plan was for a D&C to evaluate the entire lining, but just as I got ready to leave for a vacation - surprise, period! It had been 18 months since the last one and about six months since I had stopped the Tamoxifen. Follow up sono - normal.

That was four months ago and nothing since. I'm not sure if it was some kind of last hurrah or what.

Just wanted to update that everything appears to be fine. Uterine biopsy came back negative. Bloodwork shows that I am in menopause. All other bloodwork looked good. Going back in a month for a recheck on the ultrasound to see if there is any change. Haven't had any more bleeding at all so may have just been a weird thing!

Thanks for the support! Happy New Year to everyone!

Your post helps me breathe a little better. I was post menopausal but still having irregular periods when I started Tamoxifen in January of 2018. In 2015 I had fibroids which left me bleeding for 33 days (the extensive tests they did at that time actually discovered the breast cancer). All periods stopped in January 2019 with the start of Tamoxifen and blood tests this year showed me as being post menopausal so I was switched to Anastrozole. Side effects got so bad I stopped for 5 weeks, then 3 days ago I started bleeding just like a regular period. I was 51 when my periods stopped and I am now 54. I think the Tamoxifen pushed me into final menopause, but never really believed my body (hormones) were truly on board. Now left wondering if my body is just giving me the last of what I would have done naturally if not started on meds, or if it is the fibroids or something more sinister. Of course all this happens on a weekend in between Christmas and New Year's, so having to wait to call my doctors. Will probably call either my onc or OB tomorrow.

    Hi ElishebaJoy -

Honestly, it does sound like your body is just acting up as it has been through a lot. But, do call your Dr. I called my onc and he said to call my primary, so that is what I did. Primary sent me to OB. For some reason, my gut told me everything was fine so I wasn't totally freaking out but both my primary and OB took it very seriously and did pretty much every test in the book. I was told to "go get this test sooner rather than later" and " I want to do this one extra test just to put my mind at ease". But in the next breath, OB said he felt 95% sure it was nothing. Hugs to you and let us know how things turn out!

    Thanks Conniehar.

I couldn't decide whether to call my onc or OB but figured the onc would just have me call my OB anyway, so I called today and the doctor is out until Wednesday after the New Year. My OB is very thorough so even though I think it is nothing, she will probably run several tests anyway. Better safe than sorry, I guess. She, herself, had breast cancer years back so I have an advantage of her knowing more than just OB stuff! Will keep you informed!

Thank you for posting this topic. I was diagnosed in 2011 at 40 with stage 1 erpr+ her - breast cancer. Did chemo and that put me into menopause. Fished my 5 years of Tamoxifen and have been in Aromasin for 2. New Years Eve started bleeding heavily. Bleeding continued for 5 days. Did a sonogram yesterday and my lining is 15mm. My Doc is wonderful and understands how much I worry so we ar skipping biopsy and doing a D&C. So scared and worried it’s cancer. Reading these post have help me so much
