Hello! I’m Tiffany. I’m 36. I had my first mammogram on Monday. I was called back yesterday saying I need a ultrasound now due to dense breast tissue and maybe fibrocystic breast. They told me not to freak out. It’s hard not to stress though cause I lost my good friend to breast cancer. Is it normal to get called back after first mammogram? Has anyone else experienced this or similar? Will I need a biopsy? I’m trying not to let my anxiety get the best of me. I send my prayers to all of you and to those fighting battles of cancer. Thank you

Yes, it is very common to be called back after a first mammogram because they have no old films to refer to to see what your "normal" is. Often they get a better look with ultrasound (or additional mammogram views) and say "looks benign, see you next year." The ultrasound will determine if you need a biopsy. Even if you do need one, 80% plus of breast biopsies are benign. They are not doing this at this point because they believe you have cancer. They are ruling cancer out, not in.
