Antibiotic may prevent breast cancer recurrence

Interesting article. My wife was recently diagnosed as pCR or NED. Her extensive triple negative mets to spine and hips were totally eliminated by eribulin (Halaven). She has to endure a number of additional cycles of eribulin until the Dr feels it safe to drop all treatment. He said a couple clear PET scans would convince him. This antibiotic doxycycline might be a good addition to treatment. I wonder if this doxycycline has some conflicts with her chemo eribulin treatments? Also, a prescription is necessary (US) for this anti-bacterial malaria drug.

Yes, a Rx is necessary. It is also used in Rosacea, and Lyme disease treatment, not only malaria, so may be easier to obtain "off label."

Wow. Just wow.I don't even have words. I should pass this to my doc. For years I've been telling her I feel much better after an antibiotics course unrelated to my main problem. Maybe that's why my her2+ cancer got slowed down to a grade 1. Thank you for sharing! Another piece in my puzzle.
-
Wow interesting article...just finished a couple of days ago a 10 day course of doxycycline for bronchitis.
-
Um I took doxycycline for years for acne. Um...i only stopped in 2013 and then got BC in 2017....
-
My PS had me take Doxycycline after my surgery. Fingers crossed it helped clean up any errant cells! Very interesting.
-
Wow! Fantastic! Hope we hear more about this one!
-
Rah, similarly, I had Doxycycline after mastectomy.

Prof Michael Lisanti has been working on this for more than 5 years.
It seems that combining doxycycline with a second compound - eg Vit C - may be beneficial.

What bothers me is given the plausible biological mechanism and the relative high safety profile of doxycycline why dont we have more data on this?? If it works its pure genius.
And it would tie it back to Linus Pauling - the only person to win two unshared Nobel prizes: chemistry and peace, who later fell into disrepute over his beliefs on Vit C, common cold and cancer. Was this man considered to be in the top 20 scientists of all times right after all??
The biggest problem with Vit C is biovailability - anything that does not come out of a fruit/plant has shocking absorption.
History will show us but I so wish we get big number trials in place sooner rather than later.
The big pharma will not subsidize a drug like doxycycline as there is no money in it.

It appears the idea was brought ot them by his daughter - a mind with no preconceived ideas on what should or should not work.

its a good story ☺️🐣

I see my PS and my BS both again in January. I am going to bring this article to their attention. Maybe that post surgery doxy can be made higher strength for future patients.

This is such a tiny sample size. But I want to believe!
I am meeting my radiation oncologist for the first time on Friday. I will ask him if I can take this during radiation and see if it might help with the destruction of the whole cancer cells...

For those who asked their doctors about this, what was their response?
