Kidney complex cyst.

Options

Hello

Just had a phone call from my NP who follows me to say recent bone scan showed arthritis in my neck .... Which I already knew .... but ultrasound showed a complex renal cyst of 5.4 cm in my left kidney.

I know BC Mets to kidneys are rare, but the nurse practitioner suggests we just wait and re-scan in the Spring to see if there's any change. This is a new finding and I've been having vague aches around my left hip which is what prompted the tests.

Of course I Googled the bloody thing and now I'm thinking perhaps a surgical/Urologist/other M.D. opinion might be a good idea, given the size of the cyst.

What are anybody's thoughts or experiences ... ?

I would definitely ask for a referral to a urologist or nephrologist to ask more specifically. I t does not sound like mets, but does sounds like something I would want evaluated by someone who's an expert in that specialty.

Morwenna, when my sister had an MRI after diagnosis, it was discovered she had a 2 cm cyst on her kidney. Her MO sent her to a Kidney Oncologist even though mets to kidney are very rare. The Kidney Oncologist watched it for 3 years - it never shrank during chemo, nor did it ever grow. They made the determination that it was benign. It is still being watched, however.

I think it would be very wise to seek the advice of a specialist in the kidney field as most kidney cancer is found during unrelated scans and often has no symptoms until very late in the game. I learned all that while being with my sister on her appointments.

    BEST of luck to you!

    Well thanks

I now have been able to get a copy of the report and have discussed it with my doctor. Everybody is of the opinion that the correct course of action is to have a repeat scan in 6 months and that it currently does not look too threatening.

I've come down from my panic and am happy with this course of action. :)

Back to whatever passes for normal!
