Hematoma after Lumpectomy
I had my surgery 12 weeks ago and ended up with a massive hematoma. I started Tamoxifin while waiting to start radiation, waiting for the hematoma to go down, but It's still at 9cm. I'm starting radiation in October so now they are taking me off Tamoxifin. This hematoma is taking forever to go down and I'm concerned about the radiation outcome? Will it fully go away? Will I have scar tissue? I'm wondering about others who've had hematomas.

Have they drained it? I got a big one and my surgeon drained it. It had filled back up some when I started radiation, and I was worried that they wouldn’t start, but they did. I guess it wasn’t big enough to interfere. In the last week or so though (this is my fifth week) I can tell more is building back up. They said it was normal bc of the radiation. I feel a hard lump under the scar that my MO and RO sayis scar tissue.

My surgeon won't drain it because it's coagulated blood, hard to express and can become infected. I already had an infection in that breast 2 weeks after surgery. He recommended massage, heat and time. I guess I was expecting them to wait on radiation until it dissapears but at this rate that could be 6 months post op.

Ugh, I’m sorry. I’m not sure how they deal with large ones and radiation—if they’ll do it anyways or want to wait? I hope someone who knows more will stop by to share. Hugs for you

I used something called Peri Spray that cleared up my lymph fluid build up almost immediately after having it drained 2 times. A friend made up the spray with DoTerras Immortal Blend essential oil.

I was given radiation with a massive hematoma right next to the surgical site. Radiation oncologist said it was fine and was not concerned. It slowly dissolved over the radiation timeframe.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I feel a little better now. My hematoma and swelling we're huge, my nurse said the bruising was in her top 1-2%. It's still @ 9cm. Nobody would/could give me a definite answer. Im scared about scar tissue + will it fully dissolve. I already don't know how deformed it might be after the lumpectomy since my tumor was so large. Thanks again. I start radiation on Monday

Thanks for the info. I'll have to ask my doTERRA friend about it. My hematoma is a blood pocket directly underneath and surrounding my incision, so I'm using heat and massage to reduce it. They keep telling me it just takes time. Maybe I need a little more time patience.

Hi SandyHer2,
I do have a similar trouble. Hematoma after lumpectomy.
When you say 9cm, do you mean the size of hematoma? You mean you see approx 9cm diameter of dark bruise on your breast?
I got my surgery on Sep 20 and have whole breast(right side where I had surgery) and dark red/black bruise came down from there towards my waist and also towards one third of my left breast. My surgeon needle drained it yesterday and will see me tomorrow morning again. He keeps saying nothing to worry about but he said if it doesn't reduce another surgery is possible for that.
Hope all goes well with your treatment.
Best wishes,

That's exactly what I had except my incision opened up at the bottom and my hematoma drained out all over my bed. Now I have a small hole that I'm waiting on to heal.
