Bloody nipple discharge- now a ductal excision?
About 6 months ago I began having spontaneous bloody nipple discharge from my right breast (one duct). The discharge also was bloody when expressed. My doctor ordered an U/S first (I am 32) and when that didn't show anything he ordered a mammogram (also negative). The discharge persisted so he ordered a ductogram. This test also showed nothing. The doctor who preformed the ductogram referred me to a breast surgeon because he said that there was obviously something causing the bloody discharge, but it wasn't something he could see. He said that he thinks the surgeon will preform a ductal excision to remove the entire duct and test it. What are the chances that they will find something after 3 negative tests? Should I ask for an MRI first?
Thank you for your input.

That was the route I had done. Discharge —> tested discharge (not very conclusive other than confirming it did contain some blood) —> mammo/ultrasound showed a few areas that weren’t feelable —> surgical biopsy/ductal excision to take out and test .... for me it turned out DCIS and went to an MRI from there to get another look/help make decisions about lumpectomy or mastectomy.
I’m admittedly still pretty ignorant about clean margins or how much gets taken out for a biopsy, but I thinking if it comes back as cancer going back to surgery likely. I was over having my boob leaking so either way was on board with cleaning that duct out. The scar from that was minimal, and bc of the location of mine eventually wouldn’t be noticeable. Recovery wasn’t bad. Waiting for results sucks (although I had a feeling it would be bad, so I just wanted to move onto the plan for treatment).
I don’t know how helpful that is, but hopefully something there was useful. I’m 33. I’m not sure if it’s just the nature of my doctors to stay positive until you know it isn’t, but they all expected benign results. I hope yours are! Keep us pos

hello- was wondering how everything turned out for you? My situation seems similar except my discharge is bilateral and not spontaneous. US, mamo, bilateral ductogram, and MRI are all clear. Scheduled for a total bilateral duct incision in a few days. I’m worried about the pain involved with the procedure (I can only take Tylenol) and of course the waiting for and results of the pathology report. I keep thinking how can all these tests could be negative and something still show up, but.... I know it can.
Hope everything worked out for you
