travel health insurance to help cover chemo?

Options

Hello all you smart women!

I'm starting chemo (weekly taxol x12 then every two week ACx4) on Monday. I will be traveling half way across the country on Thursday to work for two weeks, (then home for a week, then back there for another two weeks) planning to continue chemo while there. Wondering if there are any "travel health insurance" that would help cover chemo since it will be out of network? I figure its a long shot but that it was worth asking.

My employment is "self employed" through an agency sort of thing and results in my traveling. It pays well and the client (and my MO) is supportive of my doing my chemo while I am there. The fact that I am working at a hospital makes it a bit easier :)

    Hi Cria.

I seriously doubt that type coverage would be available. As far as I am aware, the travel medical insurance is to help cover treatment for medical emergencies and unexpected illness for the insureds traveling abroad.

I believe only a major medical plan with ACA-qualifying minimum essential coverage would give you the type coverage you want.

I hope your chemo treatments, travel, and work will go very well for you.

Only Minimum Essential Coverage Protects People with Preexisting Conditions

You can get covered in any major medical plan during open enrollment regardless of your health status. However, outside open enrollment, some health insurance types can still discriminate based on health status.

To get the preexisting conditions protections, make sure you understand if you are getting a Major Medical Plan that counts as Minimum Essential Coverage. Short Term Health Insurance can still deny you or charge more for preexisting conditions.

I think travel insurance is for catastrophic coverage, not planned treatment. Have you thought about seeing if the MO might be able to get your insurance to cover some things in-network where you are going? Exceptions and special contracts etc can be made when providers do peer to peer conversations with provider level staff at insurance companies.
