Hello,

This is my first post here. I recently found a lump in my left breast and went to see my doctor, she scheduled a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. It turns out that I have two lumps. The report states within the left breast at the 1 o'clock position 4 cm from the nipple a smoothly marginated anechoic focus is present with good through transmission, wider than tall with preservation of the adjacent fat planes. At the left breast 7 o'clock position 2cm from the nipple corresponding with the area of palpable lump localized by the patient, an irregularly marginated mixed cystic and solid appearing focus is present which measures approximately 20 x 18 mm. This demonstrates blood flow within the internal solid septations. No posterior shadowing is visible. The clustered structures is taller than wide and crosses adjacent fat planes. BI-RADS Category 4. When the radiologist spoke with me he made is seem like there is nothing to worry about and I get a call from my doctor saying they are going to schedule me with a surgeon! I looked at the report and it suggest a FNA, but wouldn't a radiologist do this. Now I am worried out of my mind. If anyone has any knowledge of what all of this stuff means please help me understand. Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you have two masses, and the radiologist thinks they are likely benign, but to be sure is suggesting biopsies. 80% of biopsies are benign, so though it is hard to quell anxiety right now, try to stay busy and off the internet. You are going to get through this!

Depending on the masses, they may want a core needle biopsy or FNA done in interventional radiology or they may want an excision biopsy done by a surgeon. It just depends on what the best way is to get a good sample for the pathologist to examine.

BIRADS 4 means 20-35% chance that malignancy will be found, or in other, happier, words, 65-80% chance that it's benign.

try to not worry. Just schedule whichever procedures they recommend as soon as you can & get it over and done with.

    best wishes
