DCIS with infiltrates - Double Masectomy scheduled this week
Good Morning,
I was diagnosed with DCIS with infiltrates on the right side. The size of tumor is around 6. My mother had breast cancer diagnosis at 67. I am only 47. She tested negative at the time of her diagnosis to the BRCA genes. I am also negative for the BRCA gene but positive for BARD1 gene. THe BARD1 gene is associated with higher risk of breast cancer. It runs in Polish decent and since we have some Polish in us it makes sense we might carry the gene. We are very muted by now being 4th generation American.
I must say the diagnosis is devestating and overwhelming. I have a great husband who is helping me deal with all of this. I lost both my parents this past fall so it just seems to be one hit after another. I have 3 beautiful children Colin 14, Sean 11, and Ciara 7. I am just praying to be here for them.
I also have many feeling of anger, guilty, and worry about what or what might not happen. I am sure this is common but felt I would reach out to see how others are doing.

Hi Mary
I didn’t want your post to go unanswered. I too had DCIS but tested negative for the current gene testing. I lost my mother the BC when I was 28.
I’m sure someone with similar genetic testing will be along to answer you.
I just want you to know that this forum is invaluable and has provided me with a bit of calm in the midst of a load of upheaval.
Hugs

Mary- so sorry you had to join our club, but you are in good company. Years ago, genetic testing with BC was only the BRCAs. Today we know there are 9 different genetic mutations that have increased risk for BC. 9. BARD is one of them. I tested negative for everything except BRIP1. High risk for ovarian cancer and may be associated with BC. I opted for nipple sparing bmx with immediate natural tissue reconstruction (DIEP) so no implants. I went into surgery with breasts and came back out with them. At this point, other than losing feeling in a few parts of my breast (which happens with mastectomy), they feel and look like the breasts I had before kids. And they feel like my originals from the inside too. (Hope that makes sense). The scars have faded nicely and unless you look close you don't know I had anything done. I don’tknow if you plan to recon, but natural tissue recon is a great option that can be done st the time of mx or delayed (better outcomes with immediate). Here's a link to the center called NOLA on these boards that is one of the best at these types of recons (they can do the mx too):
