Hi ladies. I have a moderate pleural effusion. It is improving with treatment but the cough is HORRIBLE. every time I change positions, I cough and cough until I can't breathe. Is there anything I can take or do to help it??

I hear you! My cough is horrible too. Sometimes I pee on myself, other times I puke from so much coughing.

Is a thoracentesis an option for you (draining fluid)? My first one 3 weeks ago went well, today it was a total fail ...I passed out (was fasting for another procedure) and they only got a little fluid :-(

I take tesslon perles (sp?) Before bed and help me a little...

Good luck to both of us!

Yes, I've had bilateral MPE and both were drained. The cough persisted for many days afterwards, however now it is intermittent, don't know what triggers it, mostly cold air and some positions such as lying flat or turning around. They say it's because of scarring due to the MPE, which takes a long time to heal if it does. I've learnt to live with it and the occasional shortness of breath.

has the plural effusion gone? Mine has gone away thank god! I was feeling horrible. For the longest time (before they came up with a treatment) I would pee on myself. So humiliating I don't know if it helped but I would take a deep breath and hold it for as long as I could and then cough it out.i did this 10 times with my inhaler by me. There's nothing scarier than not being able to breathe.
