Hello, I had a lumpectomy in July 2017 followed by five weeks radiation. I had always noticed that the surgery area was firm and the breast was very swollen and tender. I figured this was due to radiation. When I had my mammogram this past March the report read there was a fluid collection which an ultrasound confirmed. I went to my breast surgeon who sent me to have it drained as they said it was a hematoma. The radiologist drained the area and said “old blood” cane out and they were sending it to be “tested” I told her she was freaking me out and she just said “my concern is very low” then the nurse rubbed my arm and said “old blood” They didn’t tell me anything else and sent me on my way. In just wondering does anybody have a similar experience? Was it a hematoma?

I didn't have this experience but wanted to share this Moose&Doc page (very reputable info in spite of the lighthearted presentation style) which explains what they are, why they form and what they're looking for. I think they're probably testing it to see if there's any signs of infection as that would possible require additional treatment rather than if it's just healthy old blood that pooled.
