HI! I am 41 and found out i have fine pleomorphic calcifications in a grouped distribution on my right breast. From what I've read this type of calcification is often seen in DCIS.

My sister had DCIS high grade at age 45...

Anything you can share would be helpful! I have my diagnostic mammogram tomorrow but It's consuming my mind. I don't even see any calcifications on the images they gave me. hmmm

Thanks!

Michele

My story is somewhat similar to yours. In 2008 I had just turned 46 (and I have really dense breasts) when had a mammo showing pleomorphic characteristics in microcalcs (DCIS). In 2009 another 'scare' with more microcalcifications in left breast (completely benign conditions associated this time). The ones I had removed in 2009 spanned a distance of about 8-9 mm, so a pretty small area, but I am pretty small in the bustline anyhow (not even an A cup). The nurse practitioner who I met with as well also shared with me there are three 'classifications' of microcalc's. Benign (of course nothing to worry about), Indeterminite (which is what mine were classified as in 2009), and Pleomorphic (more ofen times a definite problem). In 2008 the ones I had removed which did turn out to be 1.6 mm of DCIS were classified as 'mildly pleomorphic' in appearance and also listed as a 'cluster' which on mamm films did look somewhat circular and close together. In 2009 the calcs were called a 'grouping of indeterminite calcifications' and they looked a bit more 'scattered' to me and not as close together as the DCIS diagnosis had been and they turned out to be nothing. In July 2012 a small grouping of microcalc's (less than ten) were again showing up in left breast on mamm and I had a stereotactic biopsy to remove the majority of them which also came back benign. They put a 'marker' in at the time of stereo biopsy and I have had follow up mamm's since then which thankfully continue to be 'stable' in that area. MY DCIS (orginally noted on mamm in 2008 as pleomorphic) was a very very tiny area and I did not choose to do any further treatment. I am at the point now, almost ten years since first lumpectomy/surgical excision, of being back to annual checks.

Here is a link to information on calcifications. It may be more than you really ever wanted to know and is dated 2008, but I think contains a lot of good info on breast calcifications. Good luck.
