I am 18 and am in my first year of medical school. A couple of months ago, I found a small lump about the size of two peas which was regular and moved when touched, as a med student I was not too worried about this but went to get it checked anyway, where it was confirmed that it was a fibroadenoma. Then a couple of weeks ago, I felt a harder, irregular lump just above my nipple which I have gone to the GP about and she sent me for a fast track ultrasound and then potentially a biopsy. I also have a family history of breast cancer, so am very worried at the moment. Is there any chance that it could be cancer, or anything which would mean I would be unable to finish my year at medical school? Thank you xox

Hi sarahmay99, Sorry that you are having this scare. At your age it is very unlikely to be cancer. Have you or any of your family members had genetic testing done? Try to stay focused on your studies, and not let this get in the way. You are doing the right thing getting it looked at.

Your risk of breast cancer at age 18, even with family history, is so infinitesimally small as to be virtually zero. ZERO. I doubt you could even find 25 legitimately researched cases of breast cancer in an under 21 year old. However, there are several benign conditions that can cause lumps, bumps, and rashes.

My prediction is this is ANYTHING but breast cancer, almost guaranteed to be BENIGN. Keep your focus on your studies. Let us know how your US turns out.

How the heck is an 18 year old in med school?? You must be freaking brilliant.
