edited May 2018 in Genetic Testing

I had the genetic testing panel done for breast/ovarian cancers. I just got my results and was told by my genetic counselor that I have a mutation in BARD 1, but they are not calling it positive or negative because it is a new mutation they have no information on, so classified as Variant of Unknown Significance. Ok, that sounded good to me. But she said no, it is not actually good nor bad, we do not know anything about it, only that it is a mutation and will be put on the watch list.

Long story short, I have a family hx of bc with my grandfather having bc at 22, his mother and sister both died in their 20 and 33 of ovarian cancer. I had major issue with my ovaries after my son was born so I had a complete hysterectomy. What brought all this testing on, was I have been on my hormones now for 10 years. I have had several abnormal mamo's due to linear calcification, papillomas, and tiny cysts in my rt breast. All have been benign except this last year, once came back as abnormal cells but benign Every year I go in, I have to have a biopsy and calcifications are changing/coming together. So now my breast doctor is recommending I come off my hormones. Talk about freaking out......i am only 40 and don't really want to go through menopause again. It was awful. So she said the only way they will renew my hormone script is to get the genetic testing to try to gauge my bc risk better.

She told me I can't be positive nor negative for BARD 1 because the gene is newly identified. But I am seeing several people on here saying they were BARD 1 positive???? I have my appt next week with my dr to see if they will renew my hormone script.

Anyone else with BARD 1 information they can share? I feel caught in a grey area.
