Welcome to BCO, the best place on the internet for information, understanding, and support about breast cancer concerns. We are very sorry about your diagnosis and all you are going through.

Yes, we have among our membership other young women who are childless.

Depending on how your tumor is configured and positioned, and depending on its size relative to your breast size, and possibly depending on other factors too, you may or may not need mastectomy. All other circumstances permitting, your neoadjuvant chemotherapy treatment may reduce your tumor size enough to make lumpectomy a feasible surgical treatment option.

Your young age at diagnosis suggests that your cancer may be rather aggressive and that it may have some genetic cause. If genetic testing results indicate that you have a genetic mutation associated with increased cancer risk, that may make a difference as to the (extent of) surgery to be recommended for your case.

You should expect to be immunocompromised throughout your chemotherapy course and possibly for some extended time beyond your chemotherapy course. You and your household member/s should do your best to keep out of crowds and avoid contact with persons having communicable infectious illnesses. I suggest you get some protective clinical masks and gloves to wear when you (and/or your household member/s) will or might be in close proximity to persons who are sick or of unknown health status.

Dear, we know that you have had a terrible shock. The treatment plan your Doctors will recommend will be aimed at giving you your best survival prospects.

You are never alone here at BCO.

I wanted to say I was diagnosed at 53 and I was mortified at the thought of chemo and any surgery. One thing I wish I knew is that having a mastectomy which seemed barbaric to me could be fixed. I wish I knew how good plastic surgery could be I might not have totally lost it.

Try not to panic and learn about all treatment options and risks.

You will make it through this. I am 7 years out since my darkest hour and am pretty much intact.
