Pleomorphic Microcalcifications

I went in last week for a routine mammogram. I have fibrocystic tissue, and my maternal grandmother had breast cancer and they have always called me back for cysts to review on ultrasound. They called me back for additional images and then told me that I needed to come in for a stereotactic biopsy but that I had some microcalcifications that had formed over the past year that they were concerned about. These are seen under magnification and a small area. When I got to the biopsy, they kept trying to position and trying to position and finally the dr came over and said, we are not going to be able to do this. We can't get you positioned right to be able to even feel comfortable to get a needle in. He said that if I wanted to be "super aggressive" I could go to a surgeon and get a biopsy that would have to be put under for but that he didn't really feel like this was even big enough to do that. He said that I need to come back in 3 months and they will just watch the area. So naturally, I am a little confused. I am wondering if I got in there and they couldn't find it or something? I remember him saying, "how is this even possible". Not sure what that meant??? So, should I just wait the 3 months? Also as a side note, I used to have a pretty big cyst in this same area and they are saying that they don't see it anymore. Could this be remnants of the cyst?? So confusing.

It is general practice that the radiologist or whoever attempted to do the biopsy would send a note to your primary doctor. Perhaps he or she is a good place to start, having them help you to better understand the advice given to you. Let us know how else we can be helpful. The Mods

I agree. I would definitely try to talk to your GP about the results or OBGYN(whichever doctor referred you to get the ultrasound) or perhaps one of the nurses at the breast clinic. I'm not sure if I would be willing to wait 3 months if it was a concerning area. Were you provided with a report?

kmartin3243, yes I picked up my report today. It said, "despite mutiple attempts with different patient positions, I could not confirm a focal targetable lesion today. Biopsy was therefore not performed. The conclusion was an attempted stereotactic localization of subtle posterior left upper outer quadrant microcalcifications; biopsy could not be performed as there is not a targetable lesion today. Close mammographic follow up is recommmended with the next diagnostic left mammogram in 3 months. Surgical consultation may be considered if there is overriding clinical concern.

I'm thinking they could not find it.

Ask them if there is any chance these calcifications are in the skin

It's not common, but every now and then when a group of previously seen calcifications suddenly cannot be located, they are later found to be in the skin. Do you have the original report with a description of their location and appearance?
