Testing on DCIS pathology?

I had invasive ductal 15 years ago (did 2 surgeries, chemo, rads, tamox.) My mother also had BC. Now, my sister has just been diagnosed with DCIS. She just had stereotactic biopsy done on BOTH breasts. One breast was fine and the other showed DCIS grade 2, small about 5 millimeters. She saw the surgeon yesterday for a consultation about the upcoming lumpectomy. She started talking ER/PR tests and HER2. I was not aware that HER2 testing was done on DCIS. Has this changed in 15 years or has this always been done? Or, maybe she misunderstood the surgeon?

What exactly will be shown in the DCIS pathology?

Thanks so much for this help.

Good question, and it seems like something I'd know but I'm not 100% sure. A quick google search shows that DCIS is <at least sometimes> tested for HER2. I'm wondering if that's only for ER+/PR+? I was not tested for HER2 two years ago when I was hormone receptor negative. Maybe that's the difference?

I was recently diagnosed with DCIS and asked about this specifically. My breast surgeon said that they do not test for HER2 in DCIS. I have an appointment with MO soon and will ask agai

It did seem strange to me to test for Her2 on DCIS. Plus, isn't it an expensive test? Sister is upset so I thought maybe she misunderstood the surgeon.

Found this info about HER2 testing for DCIS. Seems like DCIS is not treated with Her2 targeted therapies so it would not influence treatment decision. Also says DCIS is more likely to be HER 2+

On my path report I had info about my Estrogen and Progesterone receptor status and p63, E-Cadherin

Well I had a single mastectomy last week, and i thank the stars that everything came back negative. All I need now is breast reconstruction. I will not need radiation nor anything like tamoxifen, because the other breast is healthy.

Recovery has been a breeze for me, and I am thankful for that as well. For those with upcoming mastectomies, it is not nearly as terrible as I feared.

Hopefully my other breast will remain cancer-free.
