I had my first mammogram last week & since I hadn’t heard anything I thought all was good. Today a nurse from my doctor’s office called to tell me I needed to come back in because they found a 7MM mass focal asymmetry on the left upper outer breast. They can’t get me in for the additional imaging & u/s for two weeks. I’m so confused on what this means. Could someone help me? I found posts about focal asymmetry but not much with any description of a mass. I appreciate the insight!

Hello to you both and sorry you are in that awful waiting period. Do remember that most mammograms and ultrasounds end up finding benign, non-cancerous cysts and fibrous masses, so the odds are with you. If you want more information while you are waiting for the next test (and that's up to you) you can ask for a copy of the initial mammogram report. It should have a BIRADS rating (from 1 to 5) and a bit more information than what you have so far.

All best wishes and come back anytime. We're here for you.

hi ladies! This happened to me last year with my first one too. Went back for a diagnostic 3d mammo, then ultra sound, stereotactic biopsy and finally surgical biopsy, and it was all benign. Since it’s your first images they have nothing o compare what they see to. Hang in there and try not to worry! Waiting is brutal!

Faith - call backs are VERY common, especially as it’s your first. They have no baseline to go on. I had a call back for focal asymmetry in February, turned out to simply be a ‘skinfold’....part of my breast folded over in the machine making a focal point of dense tissue. This happens all the time, so try to take comfort in that. The call back has to be done to rule anything out. Again call back rates are huge and most are benign. Hang in there and post your results please. Hugs!!
