I had a double mastectomy a week ago and have been wearing the surgical bra the doctor gave me after surgery! How long do I have to wear the bra? Is sports bras just as good? This bra is rather tight and it cuts into my side? I don’t want to take it off unless I know it’s t would hurt me in the long run!

I would call your surgeon and ask for instructions with this. There's a wide variety of post surgical things they can have you do.

I hate mine too but they want me to wear it pretty much 24/7 until they tell me I don't have to any more, perhaps 4-6 weeks. I asked if I can take breaks and they said I can take 10-minute breaks a couple of times a day. The reason they said they want me to wear it is to compress the tissue so the fluids don't collect and cause a seroma. They did say I can use another sports bra of my choice as long as it opens in the front, but I am still using the surgical ones for now. Can't wait until this part is over.

    Godschild76,

I only had a lumpectomy, but I was given a surgical bra after my surgery and advised to wear it for one week, 24 hours daily. I was also told that I could wear my own bra, and a tight one would be better than a soft, loose one. I have a couple of sports bras, so after a week switched to those. They were actually very comfortable-I still wear one at night. I have large breasts and I felt that the bra helped me to heal better, no pulling, and the bruises went away with no problem.

As others have advised, call the surgeon’s office and get their thoughts.

    Best wishes for continued healing

Torture bra...just told my PS this week how horrible it was....I’m over 3 years out.

Good luck. They compress and do the job. Consider cutting a mans soft T-shirt and wearing underneath, helps your skin
