Wife just diagnosed.....

My wife was just diagnosed last Friday. Two very small tumors in the left side both of which are under 1cm. One is “in Situ" and is grade III. The other is IDC and grade I. They are 5cm apart from each other which makes a lumpectomy very hard to do apparently. Yesterday she wasn told her ER/PR were both negative and they had to retest her her2. Will meet with oncologist once we know what the her2 is. MRI tomorrow.

I'm devastated by this. She's only 45 years old and I couldn't imagine life without her. I try to keep it together around her but it's getting harder. We both want to go to Boston to Brigham and Women's hospital for a second opinion. Anyone have any experience with those doctors?

I know she will beat this but I can't help feeling helpless which is something I don't do well with

Sorry you and your wife are going through this. BC is such an insidious disease.

I don’t have experience with that hospital but maybe someone else on this website has. Regardless you/she need to have a good relationship with and confidence in the doctors who will be treating her.

The MRI will clarify any questions the doctors have. Better they get all the answers now.

Grade 3 suggests an aggressive tumor and her treatment will probably be aggressive as well.

We all know how you both feel. It’s a scary time but once decisions are made about surgery and treatments it gets a little easier and the process typically goes rather quickly.

So keep the faith. She’s blessed to have such a caring husband.

I’m so sorry that your wife got the news that we never think we’ll get at that age. All my doctors are from theBrigham. They were the ones that found the tumor during a regular mammogram. They will most likely refer you to Dana farber next door for her cancer treatment. You will be in great hands. One of the best places to go in this situation. Hugs

edwards...not so fast...she has DCIS that is grade 3. The invasive part is grade 1. Often Grade 1 invasive tumors are ER positive. Very unusual to be grade 1 and ER negative. But still, very, very treatable.

Mer...you and your beloved wife are early in the journey. Head over to the NCCN website and read about the breast cancer treatment guidelines. Your wife should do well

Got an update. She had the MRI and they didn’t find anything else. Also, the doctor now says the two spots are 6 cm apart and they are connected by some kind of “line” or something and she said she can do it with a lumpectomy. I’m confused because I believe she originally said that they were 5 cm apart and they couldn’t do a lumpectomy.

Anyways, Onco Tuesday and plastics on Friday. Need genetic testing and still waiting on the her2.
