No Underwire Bra

Have you been told after surgery either with expanders or implants, to not wear underwire bras? For a certain time frame or forever after implants

Also curious what the restriction will be on getting in a pool after each surgery. First BMX with expanders and later expanders to implants.

    Every plastic surgeon has a philosophy about underwire bras - my first PS said no to them, second PS wanted me to wear one exclusively. Can't really advise on the pool as it was not a question I specifically asked, but it will depend on how you are healing, which can't really be known in advance.

    On the pool I was told all incisions had to be completely healed and stitches gone. This went for immersingvthe area in water period whether pool, bath tub, hot tub, etc. showers were fine though.

    Funny I was never told what to wear but recently I've been having burning in my left breast and it's relieved when I take the underwire bra off, so I'll be buying some new bras now.

    After mastectomy I was told no underwire for a while. Did buy underwire 6 weeks later and never had a problem. Not currently wearing underwire - went soft, unconstructed after last surgery. My plastic surgeon wasn't passionate either way - only concern being if the underwire caused an irritation, I might not feel it due to limited feeling in that breast.

    RE swimming - after my mastectomy my breast surgeon was "sure, whatever." I asked my oncologist at the same time and her response was similar to the one above - incision 100% healed, no scabs, prior to swimming in a public pool. I started swimming 7 weeks after mastectomy, 5 weeks after DIEP.

    I'm having my Exchange surgery on the 24th and the PS has said

    1 month with surgical bra (same one as after mastectomy...ugly thing that it is LOL)

    3 months after that without underwire

    after that said I can wear whatever bra I want. I've seen so many different things, though, I think it's best to ask your PS what her particular guidelines are.
