    Husband11,

The study you referenced earlier with SFX-01 is very encouraging indeed. Is SFX-01 simply sulforophane with glucoraphanin?

On another note, daikon radish is another potent myrosinase that does not possess the epithiospecifier protein that inhibits conversion of glucosinolates to isothiocyanates and can be added to broccoli or broccoli sprouts/broccoli powder to activate sulforophane. Even boiling the broccoli (i.e., in cream of broccoli soup- YUM) which contains glucoraphanin could still convert to sulforophane if one were to add fresh or crushed daikon radish. Glucoraphanin, which naturally occurs in broccoli is not killed off through the process of boiling, but the myrosinase is and that is why it's important to add an ingredient such as fresh or crushed daikon for its myrosinase content in order to promote sulforophane. Freshly ground mustard seed is also good, but I think from limited understanding, that daikon radish would be better because it doesn't have that epithiospecifier protein which prevents conversion to sulforophane.

"Daikon and radish sprouts contain high levels of glucoraphenin, a glucosinolate which hydrolyses to form sulphoraphene. Sulphoraphene, like sulphoraphane from broccoli, is a potent inducer of phase 2 detoxification enzymes and consequently has potential anti-cancer action. Unlike broccoli however, daikon and radish do not possess epithiospecifier protein, a protein that inhibits conversion of glucosinolates to isothiocyanates, and consequently they may represent more suitable sources of phytochemicals with anti-cancer potential. Concentrations of glucoraphenin were highest in the seed, declining exponentially with sprout development. The rate of decline was observed to vary considerably between varieties of daikon and radish, with some varieties maintaining significantly high levels of glucoraphenin."

    From Evgen Pharma's website:

SFX-01, is a patent-protected complex of sulforaphane and alpha-cyclodextrin in a stable powder.

Evgen Pharma's core technology is Sulforadex®, a means of synthesising and concurrently stabilising the naturally occurring compound sulforaphane (or novel analogues based upon sulforaphane). Pure sulforaphane is an unstable oily liquid, which needs to be stored at -20 degrees C. A significant and growing amount of academic research has focused on sulforaphane but this work has been conducted either with frozen botanical extracts containing unstable sulforaphane or ambient temperature botanical extracts containing glucoraphanin, the chemical precursor of sulforaphane.

    My words:

So it looks like if we want the beneficial effects of the metabolites of sulforaphane, you either start with glucoraphanin and deal with the uncertainties of conversion to sulforaphane, or you need a stable form of sulforaphane, which is what Evgen is working on testing. Natural source should be just as good, as long as you can get enough glucoraphanin, and enough conversion to sulforaphane.
