I will have a mastectomy on one side in a month. Some people say you need to stay elevated during sleep because of the drains so a recliner is good. Is that true? Love to hear other solutions too! Thanks

Hi, I hope all goes smoothly for your surgery. I did not sleep on a recliner but instead used lots of pillows including one of those that has the arms meant for college kids in their dorms. Sleeping is uncomfortable for many reasons but being propped up was helpful.

I just had bilateral mastectomies with immediate reconstruction on Monday, 3/26. The first night I had a really hard time sleeping in the hospital but last night I returned home and slept pretty good propped up on pillows, I had 2 pillows under my head and one on each side of me under my arms. I managed to sleep roughly 4-5 hours at a time which I was pleased with! Best of luck to you with your upcoming surgery!

I had a UMX (mastectomy on one side). I had one drain and safety-pinned it to the side of my PJs. I didn't need to prop myself up with additional pillows, but I did sleep with a pillow under my left arm to keep me from rolling over onto my drain.

    Good luck!

BMX and the recliner was a godsend for me. We had never owned a recliner before. Sleeping in the bed was painful for me even with the pillows. The recliner also helped with getting up as the back puts you in an upright position. I do recommend a power recliner though as mobility and strength may be an issue after surgery.
