Had an Ultrasound Today

I am 23 yrs. old. I noticed a bump in my left breast a week ago. It was really hard and obvious, and a little sore. A couple days later it became harder to discern. I made an appointment with the GP. She says I have fibrocystic breast tissue and she noticed that I have a cyst on my right breast in the same spot as the original lump I noticed on my left breast, but I should go ahead and get an ultrasound done. I went to the ultrasound and the radiologist says she’s noticed a small spot but it looks “very benign, come back in 6 months to see if it has grown.”

I walked away from that appt feeling not too worried. But now my close friend is telling me that healthcare professionals are way too dismissive of young adults and I should demand a biopsy.

If your GP had not sent you for an ultrasound, then I would consider it dismissive, but you were referred, and the ultrasound looked benign. I would take the radiologist's advice and follow up in 6 months. They did not tell you never to return; they are having you follow up, so they are being extra cautious. Even in older women, that is the standard for images where they can see something, but it looks benign. Glad it looks benign and glad that you know your body well enough to recognize changes and get them examined.

I would do the six months recheck confirmation. There is nothing "dismissive" about doing imaging and setting a follow up to confirm stability. The imaging indicated that this has a less than 3% chance of being anything other than benign. In other words, no biopsy warranted at this time.

Dismissive would have been not sending your for an ultrasound.
