What Do You Appreciate most about your Doctors?
Hi Everyone,
I was reminded last week that March 30 is doctor appreciation day. I sent my BS a thank you card for all she has done for me over this last year. What I appreciate about her is that she took out my 17cm 3lb borderline phyllodes tumor with clear margins. What I admire about her the most beside her amazing surgical skills is that she is very compassionate. she makes me feel so comfortable around her that I can ask her anything. She answers all of my questions and never makes me feel rushed. At the end of each visit she always gives me a hug. I could not have made it this far in this journey without her, and I feel so lucky to have her be apart of my care team.
What do you appreciate most about your doctors that have helped you along this journey?
Love and Hugs to all,
Sara

It is sad that there are so few posts here showing doctor appreciation. Maybe the good things they do is taken for granted, as a right. It appears it is more popular to bash doctors.
I do my own bashing, but prefer bashing those who fall short in their behavior and communication, and praise those who listen, and use their brains instead of blindly following an algorithm. I will praise those who show empathy rather than irritation when things go wrong and who work to solve problems, know what they do not know, know not everything there is to learn has been published, keep an open mind, HEAR what you say, and seek to think in a proactive rather than reactive manner.
My primary care for over twenty years, my now retired rheumatologist, and my oncologist, are awesome listeners, out of the box thinkers, and creative medical scientists, old school, trained before electronic medical records, rigid and irrational ICD codes and bureaucratic straightjackets of government mandates started stifling doctor creativity. My younger BS is a very skilled technician who is unfortunately overextended, and not very imaginative or creative ( much less sincerely empathetic) but is still very skilled and well-trained in the mechanics of breast surgery, and is apparently as good as it gets out here for people who are not famous or important, so I am happy she is around in case I will need a surgical tune-up when/if my BC recurs.
My former pain doctor, pre-BC, saved my career by making a correct diagnosis and providing correct therapy when others were blowing me off, and my former psychiatrist, probably retired now, saved me from deep, dark depression.
We need more good doctors, and they need to be valued and well-paid for their skills, and should be rewarded for putting the patient, and not the government regulations and mandates and “guidelines", first.

My MO, NP & PCP are so good I don’t have words to describe how appreciative I am...I owe my life to them. What I appreciate most is when they say “see ya’ next year!” Thankfully because ofthem I don’t see them often.

I love my surgeon and oncologist because they are always up to date with research and treatment options, they are kind, driven to make a difference, they are involved in many sideline activities other than seeing patients (honourary positions, research projects, lecturing) and always have time to chat about things other than cancer. They are genuinely nice people.
My oncologist has just decided to retire at 68. I will miss our relationship.

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to thank you for sharing all the wonderful things you value most about your doctors. I have enjoyed reading all of your responses. Thank you for helping to brighten the day.
Hugs to all,

I appreciate my oncologist, he works very long hours and stays up to date with all the latest treatment. He called me on a Friday night about 8pm to tell me my biopsy was benign. Saved me unnecesary anguish over a weekend.
