E. Coli Infection

Had my left implant removed last Friday, only five weeks after my double mastectomy due to my nipple not healing and needing to be removed. During the surgery they didn't replace the implant with an expander like they originally told me they would because they suspected an infection. I left the hospital with antibiotics, cefadroxil, that I will finish tomorrow. Today at my follow up my PS told methe culture for my infection came back as e. Coli. but he didn't put me on a new round of antibiotics that would fight that specific infection. Does this seem right? I plan on calling him in the morning but I have a feeling he hasn't dealt with many, if any cases like mine.

You might want to involve an infectious disease specialist. E. Coli is often a hospital acquired infection, so the hospital where you had the original and subsequent surgery (likely the same one?) should also be notified. Does your culture report specify which antibiotic is responsive to this strain of bacteria? It is possible that your PS feels that the cefadroxil is broad enough to address the E Coli, but you might want to obtain a copy to check and see if there is a specific recommendation. Is there a plan to replace the implant? You want to be absolutely sure the infection is cleared before you try again, if you plan on that. I have had both expander loss and implant loss, due to skin healing issues - not infection, so I feel for you! Good luck, wishing you the best!
