What does this mean in terms of treatment? When I asked the surgeon about this before surgery he said to ignore the rating. I'll have to ask again.

    Hi Veeder,

First of all, tell your surgeon that is not an acceptable answer to your question. Tell him/her that he/she needs to explain to you what Ki67 is. You have a right to be informed about your care and to have your questions answered appropriately.

Basically though, Ki67 is an indicator of how quickly cells are dividing and can be an indicator of how fast a tumor is growing. The higher the % the more aggressive the tumor may be. Generally, Ki67 under 15-20% is considered to beless aggressive....

    Thanks Kath1228,

It's on my list to speak with the surgeon. However, I see that the mitotic rate was 1 indicating slower growth, that's why I'm confused.

A lot of doctors don’t much faith in it. Mine doesn’t. Apparently it can’t be quite subjective to the pathologist. You might search it here for more threads about it. There have been a few. Good luck.

I can't offer much, but I did not even have a Ki listed on any pathology report. Not initial biopsy nor the final report after mastectomy. Not sure why some have it listed and others not. Mine went by grade/miotic rate prior to mastectomy and OncotypeDx(after mastectomy)

Thanks. I have grade/mitotic rate also. I have no idea if the Oncetype was done. I guess I'll ask about that also but it's not on my pathology report.

The Oncotype is a separate report. Comes from the lab in California. I would ask the surgeon if he sent one out. Most do nowadays. It takes a little over a week to come back. Usually its sent within the week of when you had the surgery. Unless he/she felt it was unnecessary, that the grade and mitotic rate was enough to determine treatment, if any, after surgery.
