Sooo Tired of being given the run around with blood in the urine
I so need everyone to talk me off this ledge. About 3 weeks ago, I checked into the ER because I urinated bright red 'cranberry juice' blood. MO asked me to check in immediately to the ER. Prior to this I was on a one week course of antibiotics for an unrelated issue. Other than that, I felt a little nausea a few days before but nothing else. Also, I have been concerned about my alkaline phosphotase levels since January (about 150 at that time but has been steadily rising for the past year). I was just told to watch and see. Anyways, not sure if any of these are related. In the ER, urine tests show large amounts of blood (which was clearly apparent) but no bacteria. After consulting with MO, the dr decided to put me on antibiotics claiming that sometimes bacteria do not show up. I went home and took the medication and surprisingly after one dose, blood started decreasing. But, after a week, I could still see some red tinge. Drs insisted that I wait another week before following up but in the mean time they sent me for an US of the abdomen. That came back showing liver lesions. They, then, sent me for a CT. That came back clear (lesions were benign). Bladder, kidneys, gallbladder all clear except for kidney stones but these they do not believe is causing the bleeding.
Another 4 days go by and I see my MO this morning. Urine tests showed medium amounts of blood not visible to the eye. MO's message was mixed when I asked her. She says she needs to talk to the GP first. Urgh, I am out of my wits and worried if this could be another cancer.
Anyone have a similar experience?

Kiks: So sorry this is happening to you. I would be worried too. Have you heard of a disease called 'Von Willebrands'? My dog has it, but humans can have it too. With Von Willebrands, you basically bleed for no reason.
10 years ago my dog (she was 2 years old, the one on the left in my pic) was dx'd with Addison's Disease. After her treatment was finally figured out, we noticed blood in her urine. First they thought UTI. Then a few weeks later she peed 'cranberry juice' blood -- we rushed her to the Vet who was alarmed at the amount of blood in the urine. After add'l testing (for UTI again, various blood clotting test, US looking for a tumor) the vet tested for Von Willebrands -- it came back positive. (I wonder of the trauma of the Addisonian crisis triggered something.)
There is no treatment for Von Willebrands (for dogs anyway). If she loses too much blood she would get a blood transfusion. Fortunately, my dog is still alive and well at age 12 1/2. She hasn't peed blood since that 2nd/last episode 10 years ago. I gather it is a pretty quirky disease.
I hope you find an answer soon and it's nothing serious.

So funny you mentioned your dog. I found my german shepherd , whose 8 years now, peeing thick bright red blood when she was 3. They initially treated her for a uti but it kept recurring over a period of a year. They finally did more extensive testing and found she has a metabolic malfunction that makes her body produce crystals in her bladder. The crystals scraping on her lining is what caused the persistent bleeding that leads to infections, which is why the antibiotics helped, but was not taking care of the root of the problem. She was then put on a special diet that eliminates the culprits that causes the condition. She has been healthy since. Hopefully, mine is a benign cause. So afraid. Just don't want cancer to catch me off guard again.
Thank you for your response.

Cytoxan can occasionally cause bladder issues down the road.
I have had a few episodes of urinating bright red blood and MO referred me to a urologist. Cystoscopy was clear. I just follow up there every year.
Hoping you get answers.

Karen- thank you. My GP finally gave me a referral to a urologist (this has been going on for a month already). My MO will not make a decision, frustrating. I am going for a cystoscopy. Praying for good results.

so this has happened to me...but my kidney stones were always the culprit. :-( good luck with your testing! I know that feeling when you pee and it's pink!
