BIRAD 0 Ultrasound and Recurrence

Options

Hello All;

I am a BC survivor of 21 years and had a recent mammogram and ultrasound that came back as inconclusive for the breast that contained prior cancer. Diagnosed in 1996 (age 29) with micro invasive poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma; 0/17 nodes. All I remember is that I was told by the histology was “good". I had lumpectomy with wide excision and radiation therapy and have been cancer free for 21 years.

Fast forward to February 2018, I went in in for my annual diagnostic mammogram to be performed on 3D mammography. The radiologist told me that that an area near the prior cancer site and surgical scar appeared to show greater distortion compared to the prior year's 2D mammogram and suggested that it was like scar tissue and showed up due to better imaging on the 3D mammogram. He suggested a follow up ultrasound to be performed two weeks later. I had the ultrasound and it confirmed what was seen on mammogram to a 2nd lesion that was not seen on mammogram. The ultrasound report contains terms like no vascular flow in either lesion, posterior acoustic enhancement, one lesion was described to have an irregular margin and one was described to have an angular margin. I recognize good and bad terms in this report. I also recognize that when there is a true suspicion of cancer, the radiologist will typically give a BIRADS rating of 4 or 5.

I am scheduled for a breast MRI on March 12, and dependent upon results, ultrasound guided biopsy

Does anyone have similar story that turned out not to be cancer?

Nervous indeed!

    Hi RhondaJ, I'm a year out from my initial Diagnosis of DCIS. I went 2 weeks ago for a follow-up diagnostic mammogram. Before I left, a tech a came out and told me everything was fine. Then two days ago I received a letter in the mail stating they saw something that wasn't on my post-rads scans, that it most probably was benig, but they want to do additional mammograms in 6 months. I'm back to "crazy-town", wishing I had a copy of the actual radiology report and wondering why they didn't have me come in for an U/S. I've had three surgeries for supposedly benign masses that were really cancerous when they did surgery. Add me to your list of anxious survivors and let us know how things go.Praying your results are good news!!

    Hi Barbara,

    So very nice to meet you. Sounds like you are doing quite well. High 5!😊

    If they saw something that was really suspicious, they would have definitely requested additional work up to occur immediately. Be sure to request copies of all of your imaging results so that you will have them on file. I can understand your concerns after your BC experience. I had my biopsy today so I am waiting for my results and I am hopeful that they are b9. I’ve been going through my work up for two months and my anxiety has been high but I have managed. I have had no concerns since my BC diagnosis 21 years ago. I have chosen to not be concerned with the “what if’s” because whatever it is I mustcarry on. You are a warrior and you have defeated this dreadful disease. Don’t let thoughts of recurrence consume you. I will definitely return to post my results and I am sending happy thoughts your way..Hugs!!

    Rhonda,

    Thanks for the High 5!

    I'm glad your biopsy is over and hope you get encouraging b9 resuIts.

    I'm a person who needs to "understand the big/whole picture". The surprising follow-up letter to the actual comments made before I left the diagnostic center, sent me into a frenzy of reading. I have a follow up appointment at my surgeons in a month or so. I just wish they had sent a copy of the actual radiology report with the letter. At least I might have gained some insight into what they saw.

    It's great that spring is almost here so I can start working on cleaning our porches and working in our yard. That will keep me from "crazy town".

    Take care and have a nice week-end
