Worried... cluster of microcalcifications on mammo- next biopsy

Hello all,

Quick background- I had my first mammogram in 2015 at age 37. It was negative but showed dense breast tissue. No family history of breast cancer.

Two weeks ago my GYN ordered a mammogram at my annual appointment since I'm 40 years old now. I had my mammo on 2/14, got called on 2/15 that a cluster of microcalcifications was found. The imaging center needed my 2015 films mailed to them to compare so there was a week long delay in comparing the two. I got called on 2/22 that I needed to come in today for additional imaging on my left breast.

Today the mammo showed I do have a cluster of microcalcifications and I need to have a biopsy done. The radiologist said he needed to call my GYN first, and then early next week the biopsy would be scheduled. He said it was small and not an emergency but that I needed the biopsy sooner than later.

I am scared. I have three children, have never had cancer before or even surgery before. How worried should I be? On one hand I'm trying to be positive and hope that it's benign. Then the hypochondriac :) in me is assuming the worst and hugging my children tighter.

Thank you so much for any insight or peace of mind you can give me.

I had the same reading of a mammo in Oct. biopsy was done right after thanksgiving. The waiting for results was awful, and having all the possibilities run through your mind is exhausting and scary. Fortunately my results were benign like the majority are. Stay optimistic because even if they do find something, but hopefully not, it's so early and can be taken care of. Knowledge is power!

This information is still scary as all hell! But to be so on top of your health is a gift but everyone has. You'll be ok. Just continue your exams when all is done.

I'll keep you in my thoughts. Let me know how it goes.

There are both good and bad calcifications. Since they are new a biopsy is the correct next step but they are not always cancer.

Should you worry? It never helps. Should you have these kinds of things evaluated? Always.

so grateful for this site! My mammo a few weeks ago showed I have a cluster of microcalcifications-BIRADS 4. I am scheduled for a biopsy on April 18. I keep telling myself that 80% are b9, but my mind won’t stop worrying. Thank you to everyone sharing their stories and support.
