I had my first mammogram last week (I'm 41). Got a call the next day to schedule a follow-up ultrasound. Tried not to freak out over said ultrasound. I had my ultrasound today and everything looks fine - there is some fibrocystic tissue on one side that the radiologist wants to see again in 6 months via mammogram. He said the tissue itself doesn't preclude breast cancer, but there is a very rare form of cancer that can develop from fibrocystic tissue, and since he has no prior images to compare this tissue to, he wants to do a mammogram in 6 months just to be safe.

I'm trying not to worry about this stupid fibrocystic tissue and this 6 month follow-up. Since this is my first mammo ever, I'm relatively clueless. Any info you might be willing to share would be wonderful. I don't want to spend the next 6 months worrying :

Mommy - sounds like your Dr is just being cautious. My sister had fibrocystic disease so her mammograms are a challenge to read.

It’s your first one so naturally you are anxious. The key word here is rare.Having another mammo scheduled in 6 months has happened to a lot of women especially in this day and time. Early detection is key. Doctors want to cover all the bases and quite frankly protect themselves from any malpractice suits.

I would think if he was convinced there was something there to worry about he wouldn’t wait 6 months.

Thanks very much, Edwards! I wasn't surprised by the fibrocystic tissue, but I was surprised that they wanted to see me back in 6 months..
