Different kind of cancer: Did you work thru treatment?

I have a family member just Dx-ed with throat cancer. It's contained in one of his tonsils. His treatment plan is surgery, a few weeks to heal, than chemo and rads.
I know that there are a boat load of different kinds of chemo. As of yet, I don't know what kind he will have. I have heard one chemo that is used for this kind of cancer is Cisplatin.
He plans on working thru threatment. Anyone here have this kind of chemo and was able to work?
