Going tomorrow for ultrasound and diagnostic mammogram

I am 58 years old with no previous health issues. My mammogram screening came back with a report of asymmetric density/spiculated mass at 12 position in my left breast 9cm deep from nipple. This is a significant change from my last mammogram. I'm going tomorrow for follow up diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. I'm understanding that the word spiculated is highly suspect for malignancy. What can anyone else tell me about these findings? Thanks!

From what I understand spiculated typically indicates Breast cancer. They are spikes sticking up from the mass. Uneven or blurry margins can be troublesome too since it could indicate the tumor has invaded the Breast tissue.

Regardless it doesn’t mean it isn’t treatable.

Thanks for your reply. Quite a mix of emotions. I'm usually pretty steady but this took me totally by surprise. I feel perfectly fine. I've always been healthy. Now I'm overwhelmed with anxiety. Everything I've read about this report is bad. The waiting is awful. My husband and children have been wonderful. But i just can't pull myself together. Trying to learn everything I can before tomorrow because I think this will not be going well.

Hi there and I'm so sorry you are going through this. Nothing is for sure until you have the follow-up mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. So while that is a lot of testing do hang in there and be optimistic until you get the definitive word. I too was struck out of the blue with BC at 59, and while it was a crazy, stressful few months I am now out the other side and feeling fine.

You may want to bring someone with you if you are feeling anxious. Sometimes the radiologist has enough info from the images to give you some news, but not always. Do come back and let us know how we can help.

Thank you for your encouragement and advice. My husband and daughter who is an RN will be with me tomorrow. So glad to hear you are doing well. That is so good to hear. I will definitely post an update about tomorrow.

Thank you Tracy. Yes the last few days were torture. Posting that yesterday's diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound results were found to be negative for any mass. The diagnostic mammogram compressed the area completely away and nothing could be seen the ultrasound. There will be a second doctor reviewing everything today but yesterday's doctor was very confident that everything is ok.
