BIRADS is not just a number at the end of the report.

The Breast Imaging Reporting And Data System is a set of guidelines/rules for how we convey out interpretations to the rest of the world. There are specific accepted terms for describing abnormalities contained in the Atlas. One can often tell who has read your study by the way the report is worded.

The link below is for a PDF containing slides (powerpoint presentation) that accompanied a lecture on BIRADS by Smriti Hari Assistant Professor, Radiology All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi. In addition to explanations of the accepted terminology, there are also mammogram and US images in this presentation demonstrating many of the findings described. It is the best summary of the subject I have found on line to date. It touches on many of the topics and questions I repeatedly see in this forum and should prove helpful to all.
