So Nervous and Worried

Hello everyone!

I am new to this forum. I am a 38 year old single mom of an amazing 7 year old. Last Friday, I went in to get a chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia, and realized I forgot to schedule my mammogram from December. The hospital was great and fit me right in. This past Monday (2/5/18) I was called back stating that they wanted me to come in for some more testing. I went it on Wednesday (2/7/18) to get a diagnostic mammogram of my left breast. My three old sisters and I all have heterogeneously dense tissue, so they told me not to worry - that it happens to them every time and instead they get diagnostic mammograms first. After it was read, the radiologist came in and told me that they found clustered, pleomorphic calcifications in my left breast that weren't there in my last mammogram. His final assessment was a BI-RAD 4: suspicious abnormality. My mother passed away from breast cancer, and I have a few great-aunts on her side that did as well. I tested negative to BRCA1 and BRCA2 last year. (I teach genetics and was interested in my own genetics). I have a meeting with a breast surgeon on Monday and am scheduled for a stereotactic biopsy immediately after. I am super nervous. Anyone else been through this same situation? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Yep. Pretty much the same situation. I too had pleomorphic microcalcifications in my left breast. DCIS was the diagnosis after biopsy. I chose a BMX with direct implan reconstruction and I don't regret my decision. Best of luck to you, and please let us know if we can be of any other assistance. I'm so sorry you have to be here, but it's a great forum to find out Valuable information

    Dear JCF79,

Welcome to the BCO community. We are sorry that you find yourself here with this breast change. We hear your worry and most here would say that any breast health change that requires biopsy can be nerve wracking. We are sorry to hear that you lost your mom to breast cancer. That must add to your distress. You are doing all of the right things to gain clarity about what this is. Try not to jump to a diagnosis until you have definitive results from a biopsy. Weekends can be particularly difficult and long when you are waiting for tests and information. Find some ways, if you are able, to distract yourself to ease your mind. Keep us posted and let us know how we can help you to navigate around here. The Mods

Hello JCF79! That's great that you're getting in to a breast surgeon and getting a biopsy so quickly. The wait is half the battle!

My situation wasn't quite the same (architectural distortion present on 3D mammogram) but I had a BIRAD score of 4 as well. I finally had an MRI-guided biopsy on 1/30, and it turns out it's a radial scar with atypical ductal hyperplasia - so everything as of now is benign. I hope the same holds true for you!

    Ladies -

Thank you for your responses. I had my biopsy on Monday and unfortunately, the diagnosis came back as DCIS. Rrobin0200, I am going to also have BMX with reconstruction, although I haven't decided between the implants and DIEP. I am meeting with the plastic surgeon this week.

Thanks for all the love :)
