Pneumonia in Breast cancer.

Hello everyone, this is my first post, straight to the point, my mother has contracted severe pneumonia which is not going away after a month in intensive care unit. She has stage three breast cancer and leptomeningeal carcinoma in the brain and CSF. Thou mastectomy and chemotherapy has been done to the breast cancer, the doctor's are skeptical about the cancer in brain. On top of that we are now faced with this life threatening pneumonia which just isn't going away. She has been infected with klebsiella bacteria and aspergillus fungal in the lungs, which the doctor's are treating aggressively with the best antibiotics available now yielding no results as such. The first day she was unconscious with high heart rate and high respiratory rate, now that has gone down still the pneumonia is still there(secretions and cuff). She had a tracheotomy done to ease her with suctioning secretions which is still there after a month. We are on the brink of losing hope. Any suggestions would be greatly acknowledged.

    Hi there Ratna,

We're so sorry to hear that your mom has been unwell. Unfortunately some topics can get missed or overlooked amongst all the other very active topics here so we're hoping this topic will get some more replies by our 'bumping' it.

Please do come back here soon and let us know how she has been doing.

Sending big hugs to you and your mom

Sorry about your mom, that sounds like such a tough situation. Sorry you have found your way to BCO but welcome!L

Lots of medical concerns---ones only a doctor could help with probably, maybe someone in infectious disease. That said, if she's not responding to hospital care, is there any chance of a second opinion, or calling in an additional expert? I know where I live tough cases get sent from the community hospitals to the major University teaching hospital.

I hope this all turns around for you soon and she starts responding to the meds.
