25 years old, pregnant & waiting for results...
Hi,
I'm 25 years old and 30 weeks pregnant. I noticed a hard lump on the top outer portion of my left breast 2 weeks ago. It felt huge to me, hard, and non-movable. It came up out of nowhere. I knew I had an OBGYN appointment approaching but couldn't help but feel the lump was not pregnancy related. Everything I have researched has given me numerous results for what it could be relating to a pregnancy, but my gut tells me otherwise. My OBGYN appointment was 3 days ago and she did a breast exam. She quickly sent in a referral to see a genera surgeon. I made an appointment same day, and he also did a breast exam. His notes were: mass 3cmm, ill-defined, irregular. From what he felt he wanted to schedule me an ultrasound. I had an ultrasound the next day and could see for myself it was not fluid filed, but appears solid and rooted. The Dr. looked over my results and wanted to perform a biopsy. Everyone seemed quiet in the room and didn't say much to ease my mind. We proceeded with the biopsy and I was sent home and told she would call me within 2-4 business days. It's the weekend so I probably won't know anything until Monday or Tuesday! Clearly I'm worried and jumping to conclusions (hence why I'm here). My mom had breast cancer twice, once was DCIS with a double mastectomy and had reconstruction, and second time was years later metastatic HER- Stage 3, with a 2nd double mastectomy done (which is apparently unheard of, I know!). She tested negative for the BRCA gene, but with luck like that and two different types of cancers I'm convinced she has some genetic predisposition for breast cancer, but it's just not something they have tests for yet! I'm not really sure what to think, but obviously through experience with my mom, we've only gotten bad news. I'm mainly just worried I'm going to be a new mom soon and hoping I'll be in good health to take care of a new baby, and myself at the same time. Anyone else out there in a similar situation? Any thoughts on what else it could be?
Erin

Erin, like Tgrn said, waiting is the hardest part. Please find ways to ease your mind until you hear from your doctors. Take care of yourself and the baby. We are rooting for you, please come back and let us know.

Hi,
Just an update of what I know so far. I got the call from the Dr. yesterday morning saying that the results came back from biopsy and it is an invasive cancer. I had a gut feeling this would happen but was never prepared for this. I go today to meet with him and discuss surgery plans. I think what is on my mind most is how the baby will be and what the plan with her is. I'm still 30 weeks along. It seems like I'll have surgery sometime soon next week hopefully and then start to recover from that so that I can have a c-section and get baby out earlier so that there isn't too much of a delay in chemo.

Erin- I am so very sorry! Diagnosis is hard at anytime, but during pregnancy has to be super difficult. Don’t be hesitant to get a second opinion if needed, these are big decisions. We are here for support if you need us.

Erin, I am really so sorry to hear this. What a mess! Have you doctors suggested genetic testing? As you mentioned, there are other gene mutations that may be at work. Some of them (like mine) also cause other cancers, as well. With your family and personal history of bc, I would strongly suggest testing.

Erin, I'm sorry you received this awful news. While I can't offer any assistance, I will pray for you and your daughter.

Erin, I am so sorry. It is just not right to get this disease so young and while you are pregnant. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I hope this community can be of assistance to you.

God bless you! I'll pray that everything will be all right! And I agree, a second opinion (on the biopsy too!) Is much needed here!

Erin, please get yourself to the best cancer center you can. I’m guessing you are in the USA, so look for the NCCN center near you. You want to be where they have experience treating pregnant women. Even if you must get treatment elsewhere, go there to get an expert second opinion on your treatment plan. If you can’t access a comprehensive cancer center, then an NCI-designated one or a university teaching hospital would be good.
There are women here who have been treated while pregnant, and hopefully you can connect with them. Also perhaps Young Survival Coalition.
I feel for you so much. I know you will find strength to do what you need to do and take care of your baby. May you have many times of joy with your little one in spite of this unfair situation.
