Bone mets

First of all I want to thank you in advance for your support!

My grandmother (68 years now) was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2012- Stage II, she got 6 couses of chemio TAC(red one) + Neulasta + 25 radio therapies. Then she started to take Aromasin, until November 2017 when on the medical checks( every 6 months) the doctor said she have bone mets.

So now she is taking Ribociklib+ Letrozol(Femara) + Xgeva once per month.

I'm really scared- she have mets in her spine, in her skull, arms, hip bones and in some of the ribs.

Please tell me honestly what is the prognosis? I just want to be prepared. I'm saying to her that I know that she will win this war again, but I really need tonknow the prognosis.

Hello good12! I'm very sorry to hear your grandmother has bone mets.

The prognosis is that she will mostly likely die of breast cancer. However, that won't happen tomorrow, next week, next month or even next year.

What will happen is that she starts this set of medications. It should kill many of the cancer cells. Eventually the cancer will figure out how to get around this treatment and she starts another one. And so forth. Sometimes we say for women with mets that we "scan, treat, repeat".

If you go to the main BCO site, you'll see the number of medications available. It's a long list. I like to think that if a person can get a year out of each treatment they'll live for dozens of years. And new medications are coming on line all the time. My first med lasted three years. The second one one year. I've been at the third one for 7 months now and its working just fine.

So don't despair! Think of your grandmother as living with breast cancer, not dying from it.
