MRI

I had a mammogram and an ultrasound last Tuesday that came back as a Birads 5 with 2 suspicious areas and a core needle biopsy and fine needle aspiration this past Friday. I haven't received my biopsy results yet but should here back in the next couple of days. I have an MRI scheduled this Friday. My question is, when doing the MRI, are they looking just at the breasts and adjacent tissues or are they looking for mets as well?

Thanks!

    hi Mle78

I just recently went through all of those steps. The MRI gives a more detailed view of the breast tissue from at least 2 directions. I have to say, the core biopsy was the worst thing I have ever had done. Mets is on the skin surface and not sure if that would show up on the mri. It also depends on the contrast they use. I struggle with mri and ct scans so my Dr gave me Ativan to take before the scans. Makes it way easier to go through, also helps the anxiety you feel not knowing what your diagnosis will be etc.

hope you have a good support system and a strong team of doctors to get you through

Hi Mie and sorry about all the testing. I went through it too. An MRI is more sensitive than mammogram and US but is also looking for abnormalities in the breast. It can pick up other things "nearby" however; mine found liver cysts I was unaware of. Best wishes to you.
