Question about titanium markers...

I had a marker placed with my last stereotactic biopsy.The biopsy showed papilloma with cluster of micro calcifications and the BS recommended an excisional biopsy. I'm presently waiting on insurance authorization. I will be meeting him again later in January but I was wondering...when the BS does the excisional biopsy does he remove the marker along with the surrounding tissue? Does he place a new marker in that area for future reference?

Hi Silbar. For my lumpectomy the surgeon removed the clip.

The marker will be used to guide the placement of a localization wire on the day of your surgery so that the area biopsied is correctly identified and removed, along with the marker.

The marker is only left in place when the area biopsied is completely benign with no malignant potential, to serve as a "do not disturb" sign for future radiologists who will read your mammograms.
