Mastectomy after lumpectomy?

Has anyone decided to have a mastectomy after they had already completed their lumpectomy? I had two doctors suggesting lumpectomy (IDC stage 2A, grade 3) I scheduled it for next week. I have always leaned more towards a mastectomy, because I have very dense breasts that are very difficult to read on a mammogram, but I would prefer to do it later. I am afraid that if I miss too much work I will lose my insurance benefits. I am a contract worker. However, because I work in schools I will have three months off this summer to recover without loss of income or insurance. Has anyone else done it this way? If so was it a problem getting insurance approval for the mastectomy or for any other reason? Thanks for listening.
