Pain after ultrasound?

I had a mammogram a few weeks ago, showed high density over 75%. Still had concerns so my doctor told meto have an ultrasound so we could see things better.

I had my ultrasound yesterday morning. The tech did her imaging (which was kinda making me feel tender but not horrible) then left to see if the photos were good. Of course I looked at the screen while she was gone, don't know why because I have no clue what I'd be looking for. Haha. Anyhow, when she came back she had the radiologist with her and he took a few more pictures from each side. He was a little rough (not in a mean way), digging in the areas he was taking the photos from and that was extremely sore. He did apologize and told me we just need to make sure we are getting pictures of the right areas. He then said we were done and that my doctor would have his report in the next day or two.

Now for my question, is it normal to be in a lot of pain afterwards? I do have very small breasts, could that be why?I was tender yesterday, by last night even my shirt brushing on them hurt. Today they are still becoming more and more painful. One of my symptoms that lend to these tests was a 'let down' feeling. Kinda like from nursing, and it's been happening a lot more since the ultrasound. I'm wearing a sports bra, underwire was killing me, and a sweatshirt which almost feels too heavy on my breasts.

I've been icing them and taking ibuprofen but nothing is helping and like I said, getting worse.

Anyone else experience something like this?

Sorry to post again so soon, I am just worried. The pain is still getting worse, I woke up from it when I rolled onto my stomach during the night. I am not sure if it hurts so badly because of the ultrasound or if its the symptoms that originally brought me to the doctor that are getting worse. I am hoping to find out the results of my ultrasound today or Monday at the latest.

I find it so strange how quickly these symptoms started and how things are changing it seems, almost every other day. I was so hopeful that they would subside after my period, but there was no change. I'm not sure if the lumps that I'm feeling are nodes, cysts or just the density that is already in my breast. I took a bath last night to try to soothe everything (mostly my brain which hasn't stopped) and was washing up and felt another lump (probably swollen gland/node) in my armpit. It just seems like its never ending. I cannot wait to find out what this is and hopeful its an infection of some kind that will help.

    Hi alldone84.

I’m sorry I can’t help you with the pain post ultrasound (as I’m still waiting for mine) but out of curiosity, do you have to go for a biopsy also for a definitive diagnosis?

Hi KSK, thank you for your response.

I ended up going to the radiology department to get my results printed out. I have an appt on Monday with my doctor, but I couldn't wait anymore. I had a panic attack at work. I’ve been feeling for the past couple months that something was wrong. Wether it be cancer or not, I just knew it wasn't right.

I got to talk to the radiologist, which was nice. He said I have a more severe (not the word he used, but cannot recall the one he did) fibrocystic breast condition. Not severe as in its worse then most, just that I have many many more cysts then he's used to seeing. He is suggesting to my doctor that I go foran mri to be able to get a better view of everything. He explained that this condtion can cause pain in some. He said some other stuff too, however i will not get into everything right now. He said that my doctor will help answer any more of my questions at my appt on Monday

I will now move over to the 'benign breast concerns' forum

    Thank you

I wanted to ask if the pain ended up being due to the ultrasound. I went in yesterday for my left breast but they checked both. Any ways my left breast is hurting really bad, I have also been poking and proving at them to see if I findicated what the doctor felt.

Hi! I also am wondering if your pain went away. I have had the same experience when I had particularly intense ultrasound about a month and a half ago. I have very, very dense breasts. I found out my results right away and know that everything is okay but I have recently called the nurse about this pain and she recommended the same things recommended to you. You're description of there being a feeling of "let down" like nursing is exactly what I was trying to describe to the nurse. This makes me worry that they ruptured a milk duct or something while doing the ultrasound. It was very, very painful and and eventually got worse when I got closer to my cycle. I usually have slight tenderness before my cycle but it was amped up by 10. It went away shortly after my period ended but started hurting again A LOT in just ten days. I'm thinking maybe I would be getting slight tenderness (usually not noticeable to me) due to my cycle coming. I'm imagining I have some tenderness and inflammation that is not too bad anymore but when added to cyclical tenderness is very bad. I've had the same experience of it waking me up at night when I turn on my side. Your description was exactly what I am dealing with. I hoping this goes away over time. Would love to know if yours did. Thanks.

the major pain from the ultrasound tapered down. But my breast pain has yet to go away. I’m doing everything I was told to and still nothing.

My cycle has also changed a lot since all this started and it keeps getting worse. It’s as if I’m going through menopause with my uterus and as though I’m overly full of milk like breastfeeding.

The doctors I’ve seen don’t have answers for me. They seem to think I’m too young for everything and that I’m fine. I’ve gone for more tests and still nothing.

I’m sorry I don’t have any answers to maybe help anyone out. I’m still trying to figure this all out and feeling very alone while I’m doing it.

I’ve also lost 14 lbs in the last three months, but have no appetite to try to stop that from happening. But when you’re in pain for most days it’s hard to think of getting up to cool for yourself
