Micro calcifications and biopsy

I'm 41 years old and had my first mam since turning 40. Had one in my late 20s due to a lump (which ended up being from caffeine-so no worry & went away).

While I was getting this mam, the xray tech took the first set of photos and told me to stay there so she could check with radiologist. She came back and said that he wanted magnified of my left breast in a certain area. So we took those while I was there. All the tech said was he seen some abnormalities and wanted better pics.

So 2 days to by and my ObGyn calls and aays that they have sent over orders to the hospital for me to get a biopsy of my left breast as soon as possible, "as the radiologist seen several clusters of micro calcifications" and said that he needed me to schedule a followup with him to discuss the tests.

I'm really beginning to worry. I couldnt schedule it Friday as the scheduling dept was closed, so I have to call tomorrow.

Is this normal? Is there anything that I should be worried about? Also, when I go back to the doctor what questions should I ask - for either outcome?

No need to panic just yet.  Most biopsies are benign, 80%, but it's always good to catch something early.  Micro- calcifications are not unusual and are not necessarily invasive, but you'll have to wait for the biopsy to be certain.  When you know whether you have a problem or not, that is the time to think of the questions.  Let us know what happens.  Hoping for B9.

Well my biopsy came back positive for ICD - grade 2 & DCIS, high grade.

I am ER/PR+, HER2+ as well. I have my lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy scheduled for 12/26. Then radiation and hormone therapy for sure. Chemo will depend on node biopsy and pathology.

So sorry the findings were bc. I had a lumpectomy and SNB too, followed by radiation, so if I can do anything to help please let me know. You might also want to check in on the "lumpectomy lounge" thread where there is a lot of helpful advice available. Please stay in touch and I'll be thinking good thoughts for you.

Thank you. I'm still trying to process it all. Sometimes I feel as if it isn't real. If I have any questions I will reach out. I will check out that thread as well.

Had the lumpectomy on Tuesday, the day after Christmas. Still have some pain, but able to manage with meds. Have a lot of bruising.

They only had to the one lymph node for the biopsy, which made me happy. He did say that he did take more breast tissue closer to chest wall, since it is only about 1/2" from chest wall, to be safe.

I go back to BS on 1/4/18 to see what pathology says. Hoping for clean margins, so another surgery isn't needed; and that the lymph node is clean, and had no cancer, which will reduce my chance of having to have chemo.

MHerzberg - Glad to hear only 1 lymph node needed. Hang in there with recovery. 1 day at a time.

Good luck with the BS today.

Went to the BS for my week follow-up. Went I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. Well can't out with the best!!!

Pathology can't back from surgery, 0/2 lymph nodes had any trace of cancer, the margins were completely clear of IDC, by min of 12.8mm, but the DCIS martins were .02mm clear, which he said were still within parameters, but close. So I'm finished on that part.

He did take 2 large pieces. He said that they were from my skin to my chest muscle for what was taken. No wonder it sounds hollow when I scratch it.

So next steps are to meet with radiology oncology and medical oncology to get radiation set up, start hormone therapy and see if they want chemo. Not to excited about the thought of chemo, buy he said it all depends on how aggressive she wants to be.

So good news on the home front today!!
