Hello! I'm a newbie here. I've had breast pain for about 3 years on the left side. It used to come and go but now it's constant. I had an ultrasound when the pain started but it came back fine. I went back to my doctor and she seems concerned. Although my breast looks normal it's hot to the touch where she can feel a fibrous mass (I couldn't feel this on myself). The pain is exactly where this mass is, it seems long. She has sent a req for a diagnostic mammogram (biopsy if needed) and another ultrasound. I'm 37 and scared. Am I overreacting??!! Help.

does anyone know how long it typically takes to get a diagnostic mammogram? I'm still waiting to be called in for an appointment.

    Depends on where you live.

Some centers wait for the patient to call and schedule the appointment.

Give them a call and see.

I had some pain off and on on the left side. It turned out to be a fibroadenoma. They can put pressure on nerves causeing some pain. but are not cancer and will never turn into cancer.

When I get my mammogram, what paperwork should I ask for?

Mommyme, ask for a copy of the imaging report (not just the patient letter). I'd also ask for copies of the images on disc. That way, if you ever need to go somewhere else to be seen, you have copies of everything they need for proper comparison.

I'm finally getting some tests done this week. I have my ultrasound first, should I be asking for a report?

Hi there. Yes, I would ask for a copy of the report and a set of images. The more information you have the better, and as MTwoman points out you will be ready if you decide to get a second opinion. Best wishes.

I just had my ultrasound done and was told that if they didn't see anything suspicious they wouldn't do the mammogram. My doctor specifically asked for both tests so that nothing was missed. My ultrasound took like 5 minutes and the radiologist let me go, so I am assuming everything looked fine. Am I being paranoid to want to follow up with my doctor and ask about the mammogram?

No! Follow up on the mammogram and ask for 3D if they offer it in your area. There is a reason your doctor wanted both. Mammograms, ultrasounds and MRI’s all see things differently. The science of the imaging of each work together and are visually different. MRI is a last result or if there is still questionable lumps. But the other two are for sure important.

Not, at my hospital the mammo came first. I was only supposed to get an ultrasound on the side I had symptoms. I ended up having to wait for them to get approval to ultrasound the 2nd side....the one the mammo actually found the cancer in.

    Good luck!!

Thanks so much Greeneyes81. I have an appointment with my doctor to figure this all out. I couldn't believe how dismissive they were. The radiologist said I wasn't 40 and no family history of BC so no mammo.

I was diagnosed with a fibroadenoma 20 years ago after a core needle biopsy. I had a mammogram because I felt a lump in one breast, and the mammogram should suspicious lump in the other one... (original issue they said was fibrocystic tissue) So the left was biopsied and determined to be a fibroadenoma. Since another has popped that I could feel just above the nipple. Surgeon tried to do a needle biopsy in the office and when he couldn't get any fluid just said it was another fibro..... I have in the past couple of months had some shooting pains in my left breast - some are pretty severe. I have been getting mammograms every year now since the biopsy, but the pains have recently started.... probably menopause causing this? I am now 54 and been going through menopause for about a year or so.
