The title is a little misleading so hope people read the article. This is for triple negative bc, doesn't apply to hormone-positive cancers, and may also not apply to those taking anti-hormonals.

For what it's worth, my MO specifically said I shouldn't consume soy because of my ER+PR+ status. However, she then said it's OK to eat TOFU. There is so much conflicting info out there, it's hard to keep it all straight.

swg - One of the reasons many of us join BCO is to bounce info off each other so we can make better informed life-saving decisions. Keep posting and reading here at BCO so we can all share what we're learning. BTW, I started following you just before you were diagnosed. You remind me of my daughters. I witnessed your shock and fear when you received your diagnosis. And then I watched as you received the other diagnosis in your other breast. You have already come a long way since then, and I wish you the best. Keep asking questions.

My MO, who is at a teaching hospital, allows whole soy products (such as tofu) in moderation, and disallows concentrated soy protein (such as soy protein isolate, or soy protein powder).

ksusan - So it's probably OK to consume Edemame?

Aw, thanks Meg101. Yeah..I gotta say, I'm still kind of in shock. You know that surreal feeling, where you're just plodding from one drs appt to the next? I'm just hoping life gets back to normal, at some point, but I know I have to be prepared for everything.

I've seen studies, btw, indicating soy/soymilk/tofu is not harmful for people with hormone-positive cancers. I'm reading a book by Diana Dyer who had breast cancer and then a recurrence years later, and is a nutritionist. She had hormone-positive cancer and drank soymilk, ate tofu..etc.

Yes, edamame = soy beans, so it's in the same group of whole-soy products as tofu.

I just read a book written by a breast cancer surgeon and she had some great insight into this disease. Years ago, researchers found a mouse mammary tumor virus that causes breast cancer in mice. Since then, there's been research done that finds a lot of similarities between the virus in mice and a human virus. If scientists can determine that a virus causes breast cancer in humans, they could make a preventive vaccine and put an end to breast cancer.

The book I read is called "The End of Breast Cancer: A Virus and the Hope for a Vaccine" by Dr. Kathleen Ruddy. The breast cancer surgeon also talks about her work with patients and how important it is to prevent this disease. Check out Amazon if you want to get a copy of this book!
