Just wanted to share this--VERY interesting study about how eating 5 fruits and veggies a day, plus getting 30 min of physical exercise 6 times a wk, increases survival..this is a scientific study..

http://ascopubs.org/doi/10.1200/JCO.2006.08.6819

Note that, you HAVE TO eat the 5 servings, minimum, AND the physical activity. Either one alone didn't result in an increased survival benefit.

    Thanks for posting. I'm posting this figure. Hope there will be more research along these lines

    VF = vegetables-fruits

    PA = Physical activity

    I've been looking into clinical trials, and I'm seeing quite a bit. Including a study of broccoli sprouts that are supposed to have anti-carcinogenic effects.

    Thanks for posting the figure, Eren. I missed those when skimming the article. It does show that at least up to 5 years out high PA alone has a survival benefit, if inferior to combined high PA/high VF. The synergy of high PA with high VF is amazing though. I am hanging on to that blue curve at the end of the timeline with the help of meds, very high PA and very high VF (relative to study doses). I was  metastatic at initial diagnosis so I figured I needed bigger lifestyle changes!

    This is very interesting, but if I understood it correctly, this seems to indicate (near the end of the article) the advantage of High VF/PA is not significant for ER/PR-. Is that what others read? I’d like to think I can actively do something to decrease my chances of ever having to deal with this again. Nonetheless, it can’t hurt but may not help, which is sad forhormone negative people.

    Yes I did glean that from the article, as well, that it's mostly for ER+/PR+ people.

    But I want to mention something I read in a different article...for HE2+ patients, flaxseed actually has an effect similar to Herceptin. WHen I googled, there's actually a topic here on it:

    Heidihill, have you looked into any clinical trials? There's so much research going on right now.

    I think immunotherapy is really exciting..the idea of channeling the body's own immune system to fight tumors.

    Of course, the dangers are that your immune system starts attacking other parts of your body, but they're working on that.

    Brightness, we have similar dx. For more than 10 years, I've exercised more than 30 minutes a day (walking the dog 30 minutes a day and running on the treadmill for 13+ miles/week) and ate at least 5 servings of fruits/veggies a day. I still got BC. Since I've recovered from chemo & surgery, I reverted back to my treadmill routine. I still eat at least 5 servings of fruits/veggies a day.

    I'm also disappointed to read that these habits may not help my survival, but I figure it couldn't hurt so I continue on. Fortunately I happen to like fruits & veggies and running on the treadmill.

    Doing what you're doing certainly can't hurt, BellasMom! Looks like you had two tumors, just like me? Only mine are in my right.

    I'm trying to decide btwn a unilateral or bilateral mastectomy.

    I'm getting my left biopsied tomorrow for a weird spot that showed up on the MRI. But the radiologist didn't seem to think it was anything bad.

    imageThat was a good read, but the most interesting part was about alcohol consumption. Am I reading Table 2 incorrectly or should I be drinking 60+ drinks per month? It definitely seems at odds with other recent publications with regard to alcohol. The categoric p-value is rather high, but the trend value would be statistically significant. I need to learn some stats to make some sense out of it.

    You know what..I think you're right! Wuttttt....that is so weird.

    100 drinks a month?? How can that be right?

    I'm gonna show that to a Dr. friend of mine and see what he says.

    I wonder if they've reversed the figures. Might be worth contacting the PI.
