Hi, we just received our surgical pathology report and it says Papillary Growth Pattern IDC, NOS type. Is this common? Did many of you see the same on your surgical pathology reports? It seems to be a bit confusing and our surgeon was not helpful.

Hi SD, so very sorry that you find yourself here. Regarding rarer architectural patterns, many Breast Pathologists are trained differently where descriptions can differ, unfortunately. I would request clarification directly from the pathologist on the "Papillary Growth Pattern". It's possible the tumor is mixed.

Conventional IDC (NOS or NST) is the most common subtype of invasive breast cancer, as you know.

Conventional DCIS (Stage-0 in situ) can have Cribriform, Solid, Comedo or Papillary growth patterns.

Papillary Carcinoma typically has a Solid or Cribriform growth pattern and can have Intraductal, Encapsulated or Intracystic, Solid or Invasive variations.

    dear Obsolete,

I want to thank you for all your posts and all your links to research. Thank you for all your guidance through what is obviously a tough journey for all of us. I deeply appreciate it and words can’t express it.

The advice is well appreciated and what I expected. I’m trying to understand if I’m crazy but clearly I’m not. An oncologist I spoke to later today agrees that this is unusual and worth a second look. We got our treatment and reports at MSK and I’m shocked that the approach to the diagnosis is so flippant. This does seem different and worth further analysis.

    Thank you again.
