My daily newspaper runs a column, To your good Health by Dr. Keith Roach. He states that certain essential oils applied to the skin can have a estrogenic effect on the body. A woman wrote in that she was using a blend of oil containing Lavender on her wrists, neck and inhaling it. She said that after several weeks she noticed some tenderness and aching in her breasts. She said that her right breast became very painful. She had read his previous article regarding lavender's estrogenic effect. She stopped using the oil and her symptoms resolved.

She was concerned about how many women with an estrogen receptor positive breast cancer, or "anyone at risk" for cancer unknowingly use these oils and may be harmed. Dr. Roach replied that it is true that lavender oil has estrogen like activity and he would recommend against its use on the skin in women with and history of estrogen sensitive tumors. He said he suspects that although the risk is low; the risk isn't zero.

I just thought I would pass this along.
