Waiting for Biopsy

I'm a 45-year-old mom to three. My head is spinning with how quickly things are moving. My primary care physician found a lump in my left breast during an exam on Friday, 9/22. Today, 9/25, I had a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound.

Report says "targeted ultrasound of the upper outer left breast demonstrates an irregular hypoechoic mass with
antiparallel orientation measuring 1.6 x 1.1 x 1.7 cm. No axillary adenopathy."

ACR BI-RADS CATEGORY 4.

I go Thursday, 9/28 for biopsy and will receive results on Tuesday, 10/3.

Thankful that I found this forum. What a wealth of information! All of this is a little overwhelming, but the support here certainly helps.

jamorcar, sorry you find yourself here! We all know how frightening this situation is. I too had a BIRADS cat 4 lesion, which turned out to be an atypical papillary mass. My process from palpating the lump to getting a biopsy was significantly longer, so I'm glad your situation is moving along a little faster. The waiting between procedures is really difficult!

Do you have any family history of BC? If so, have you had genetic testing? As you may have read through the forum posts, ~80% of lesions are benign. Hopefully you are within that good percentage!

Good luck and do keep us updated!

    Ultrasound report 9/13/17

    BIRADS 4B

1.7cm lobulated partially solid mass with a circumscribed margin in right breast at 12 o'clock middle depth 2cm from nipple. Mass is hypoecholic. It has increased in size from 1cm in March. Color flow imaging demonstrates increased vascularity in surrounding tissue. No abnormalities seen in right axilla.

I'm scheduled for consult with a surgeon this Tuesday 10/3/17 to schedule biopsy.

I'm here for moral support with like-minded women and so appreciate all I've learned so far from moderators. Thank you for being here.

My question: is this a fast growing tumor? What does increased vascularity in surrounding tissuemean?

Izonprize, that is significant growth over a 6 month period, but I am not sure I would classify as "fast growing". What kind of biopsy are you having? Good luck!

I was scheduled for a needle biopsy this past Tuesday but my primary care physician never sent the orders and she couldn't be reached and so they had to cancel my appt. Therefore, I scheduled a consultation with my former oncologist for this Tuesday.

Thanks so much. I do not have a family history of BC, mystic88. My biopsy was yesterday. I will get the results Tuesday. And so the wait begins!

So sorry your biopsy was canceled, Izonprize!

Jamorcar I am so glad you got your biopsy so fast And hope you get benign results on Tuesday! I really hope I can get scheduled quickly for this biopsy because the waiting has been too long. Back in March when they wanted to redo Mammogram and Ultrasound of my "cyst" in 6 months, I thought, "Why do you want to watch a cyst??" Now that the followup is showing it is not just a cyst I can see my instincts were correct. If I am learning anything here, I am learning to be more educated and to ask more questions. I had no idea my BIRADS was a 4B until I had to collect all my records because of the cancelled biopsy on Tuesday. All the rad told me was he was concerned that it is no longer a cyst but has changed appearance to something more solid. I just want it all out. I'm a 59 year old with 4 grand babies to love a lot longer!

Question: should I ask for an excisional biopsy vs the needle just to stop all the steps to getting to the final answer?

Well, my doctor called this morning to let me know that it's an invasive carcinoma. She also mentioned that it appears to be poorly differentiated. I'm thankful I don't have to wait until Tuesday, but this is a shock. Next step is MRI and finding a surgeon. I have not seen the pathology report, but I guess this tells me what I need to know for now. This feels so surreal.
